[It] has been described as being ‘like a comet in the sky of French cinema,’ an ‘unknown masterpiece,’ and an ‘unprecedented’ work that refuses interpretation even as it has provoked reams of critical writing. Its rhythmic collage of images – a girl on a gurney, a fisherman, Greek ruins, a Sicilian garden, a Spanish corrida – is accompanied by an abstract commentary written by Sollers, and only the somber lyricism of Antoine Duhamel’s score holds the film’s elements together. At first viewing, you fear that [it] might fly apart into incoherent fragments. Subbulakshmi delivers an inspired performance in accepting India's prestigious Swaralaya Puraskaram award. Lauded by Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru, Subbulakshmi proves worthy of all her honors in this 1997 concert before a hometown audience in Chennai. When she returns home, her dad (Ashish Vidyarthi) finds that she is in love with Raja, instantly approves of him, and asks her to invite him, which she does. Raja accordingly arrives to meet her family - and it is this arrival that will pit him against goons dispatched by none other than Mahalakshmi's dad, who wants him dead - at any and all costs.
