A dark night is lit up with the fluorescent colours and metallic sounds of an illegal party. Andrea, the organiser and DJ, confesses his joys and turmoils through a series of increasingly delirious voice messages addressed to someone far away. It is Andrea’s solitary cry for help: as we uncover his relationship with the listening ghost, he narrates his human experiences at the clandestine rave. In a reality where policing and punishment go hand in hand, a party suspended in space and time inflames the city, setting free the bodies we inhabit. In this new day and age can we still find ways to connect with each other or are we alone even when we are together?

The hero of the movie is a popular composer and jazz performer. He is certainly a gifted man. However, his character is... to put it mildly, uncomfortable. He lives by emotions, he cares little about the fate of people who love him. Some will think that he is right in his own way; some will think that he missed something important in life. But anyway, one thing is certain: God is helping him.

Essentially a dizzying montage of quirky shots of legendary Beat Generation writer William S. Burroughs and noted surrealist artist Brion Gysin, this nearly 20 minute avant-garde short features repeated articulations of such random things as "Hello," "Where are we now?," and "Look at that picture" instead of music or standard dialogue. The narrative is decidedly nonlinear and perplexing, with no discernible plot whatsoever as we see images of Gysin working on his paintings and calligraphic designs and Burroughs rummaging through draws, packing a suitcase, giving a young man a physical, making a call in a phone booth, and waiting on a platform for a subway train.

The third ring offers a whimsical glimpse into the future - or at least a future from the POV of the mid-20th century - with a plethora of zany postwar inventions. While none of the cartoons "of tomorrow" foresaw smartphones or DVD players, these far-fetched contraptions, gadgets, houses and farms, televisions, and various modes of transportation could only come from the madcap mind of Avery and his M-G-M crew. Uncut, restored and remastered in High Definition for the first time, Tex Avery Screwball Classics Collection Volume 2 is another must-own collection from the master of hand-drawn mayhem.
