In bootcamp their sergeant turns out to be the same man, whom they constantly vex and bewilder. When the boys are sent to the front lines and the sergeant is captured they must rescue him, which they do after doping themselves with laughing gas. At the end they get shot off into the sunset on a cannon shell.

The township of Houjie, near Guangzhou, has been transformed from a rural village into an industrialized township following the massive influx of Taiwanese and Hong Kong capital during the 1980’s. Louis Hayward, star of 1940's Son of Monte Cristo, returns to Alexandre Dumas territory in Columbia's Return of Monte Cristo. This time, Hayward plays the grandson of his namesake Edmond Dantes, who, it will be recalled, was cheated out of his fortune and falsely imprisoned, only to escape and wreak vengeance on his betrayers by assuming the guise of the Count of Monte Cristo. Just like grandpa, the younger Dantes is framed by a trio of connivers and shipped off to Devil's Island. Escaping with a fellow convict, political radical Bombelles (Steven Geray), Dantes adopts the bearded guise of an elderly man in order to destroy his enemies and reclaim his birthright. One of his principal antagonists - at least during the first half of the film - is haughty aristocrat Angele Picard (Barbara Britton), who because she wasn't a part of the original conspiracy genuinely believes that Dantes is a criminal.

In October 1925, due to a depression in the textile industry a 10 percent wage cut was imposed by mill owners. The strike that followed went for thirteen months and was vigorously and violently opposed by mill owners and police authorities. This was not an uncommon consequence of striking, and strikers were often fired upon throughout the early Twentieth Century by both police forces and the National Guard as was demonstrated in the modern section of D.W. Griffith's INTOLERANCE (1916) and many other films of the time. THE PASSAIC TEXTILE STRIKE was made by the strikers' Relief Committee to not only show what was happening on the picket lines but to also provide much needed funds for the relief of strikers and their families.
